"Hangout" Movies

I was first heard of this concept listening to Quentin Tarantino talk about the movie Rio Bravo, which he described as:

"movies whose plot and camerawork you may admire but whose primary attraction is the characters. A hangout movie is one that you watch over and over again, just to spend time with them."

The example he gave was Rio Bravo.

For me, I guess the quintessential hangout movies would be the Japanese film Linda Linda Linda and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Are there any movies in particular any of you feel yourselves going back to just to "hangout" with the characters again?

Oh, you already said Scott Pilgrim.

Honestly, I don't attach to people well, so I can't say that I do this, but I'll admit to George McFly being a big reason I like Back To The Future.

'Rio Bravo' is awesome, and a pretty good choice in this regard. 'The Quiet Man' is probably the hangoutiest-ass movie ever, though. 'Hatari!' is up there, too. (Maybe I just have some sick John Wayne predilection.)

^Right with you on The Quiet Man. I think it helps that those characters spend a ton of time just hanging out with each other, too. (Though I personally am rather burned out on that film since my dad watches it EVERY TIME it's on TV; I've seen it more than some of my own favorites.)

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

^Seriously. I mean, I've seen loads of movies with chummy likeable characters, but 'The Quiet Man' makes even the good-griefin IRA look like a swell bunch of guys. Don't know how John Ford quite managed that----dark sorcery, perhaps.
