Nonsensical Anime Titles

#1

Post by Deepfake » Tue Jan 10, 2012 1:42 am

So I just read an article on TVtropes that name-drops Cowboy Bebop as an example of a nonsensical anime title. I thought that was especially funny, as the bounty-hunters' ship's name is Bebop, and the bounty-hunters are known as Cowboys. Pretty clear to me, but I guess anyone that doesn't understand titling wouldn't get it.

They could always have named it Green-Haired Guy Shoots Lots of Guns (I call dibs on that, btw, no using it.) I guess, but it clearly doesn't play into the genre-crossing mystique of the show.

Anyway, what's your favorite "Non-Sensical" anime title? I love them. Here's one for the list:

Boogie Pop Phantom

The best I can think of is Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan, aka Bludgeoning-to-death Angel Dokuro. But I guess that makes sense because there is this angel, and she does bludgeon people to death.

Actually, Azumanga Daioh is more nonsensical. Even when you learn about the purported origins of the name (it's a munging of the author's name and the name of the magazine it was published in), it doesn't really have anything to do with what happens in the show.

Actually Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is named after the title character and Bleach is a reference to the main character's hair color, it being what Japanese peoples' hair looks like when it has been bleached. So those do have sense, even though Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is a very silly name.

Bleach is still a stupid name considering it's SAMURAIS IN THE SPIRIT WORLD WOO

Bobobo has the honor of just being a ridiculous anime in general to have a title like that.

Maybe it's called Bleach because you need to bleach your brain after seeing a Hollow. You know, because they're scary.

Eh, that's all I got.

FLCL is actually an intentionally absurd title. It's meant to make fun of the "cool" titles that Anime are branded with - in fact, the show is generally made to parody tropes of Anime and Manga. You have to know about the culture to understand the show.

Agreed on both counts.

I've always genuinely thought it was called Bleach because bleach makes things white, and ghosts are white. =/

Never really been a fan of the show anyway.

naming Bleach after Ichigo's hair is like naming any show with a blue-haired protagonist "Hair Dye."

As such, I will now accept this explanation as canon. And I would probably watch a show called Hair Dye, provided it's actually about insane people stabbing one another with magical girl wands.

As for other nonsensical titles, I can't think of any atm because most of the shows I watch tend to be exactly what they say on the tin. [take Cardcaptor Sakura for example]

I've got three chances left.

Some titles exacerbate the confusion with the inexplicable exclamation point, like Shuffle! or Blame!

Am I looking for anime/manga or playing WarioWare?
