He is said to be 10-12 but he looks/acts/sounds like he's 13-14!! How old is this kid really? Same goes for the other main characters too (Misty, May, Dawn, etc. (with the exception of Brock who's obviously 17-20)).

According to Wikipedia, when the series started he was 10. That was 1997, so I suppose now he's 23. ;)

Technically in the series, I think Ash started out 10 and is now around 12. That being said, it's not uncommon for children in cartoons to act older than they are, because a show about 10-year-olds who acted like 10-year-olds would be pretty ****ty.

Or you could, you know, not make your show about 10 year olds.

10-year-old viewers can't relate to 20-year-olds and they're 20-year-old problems. Or something like that.

I dunno man, I liked Scooby Doo as a kid. You don't have to keep it true-to-life, if it's humor. I see what you're getting at, though, it's part of that irrational marketing logic.

Now that I think about it, maybe people in the Pokemon world age differently than we do. Maybe certain parts of their bodies age quicker than others, so while Ash and all his pals might only be 10ish, they all have well-developed brains.
Just look at May. She's clearly got some body parts that aged quickly for a 10-year-old.

I wouldn't give them that much credit. Ash has basically spent the past 13 years being an idiot tween who has to re-learn the basic concepts of pokemon battling. That and he thinks a pikachu is a good choice to battle everything. He comes off like he has the social awareness of a 15 year old, but has the menial capacity of an 8 year old.

He has to use Pikachu.
All of his good Pokemon were busy being neglected, released into the wild or left with Professor Oak.

But as everybody knows being in the main cast amplifies your chest by three sizes.
I have seen a decent explanation for the age thing, though i can't find it on the internet, i have it on my computer though.

He's eternal. When he sends Pokemon to Oak's place, he's actually placing them in a frozen state. In this frozen state, he absorbs their souls, slowly but surely.
Final boss of the anime is Pikachu versus Lich Ash.

And a Rhydon in a volcano.
One theory is that it's swallowed a Light Ball item, making it forever powerful.
Fun fact: The Pikachu from Yellow carries one if you trade it to G/S/C.
