Oh dear God, someone please stop Seth MacFarlane. He wants a FOURTH animated show on Fox, as if he didn't have ENOUGH air time on Fox. What are your thoughts on this, humble members of VGF? Do you think this is a good or bad idea, and why? I personally think it's a TERRIBLE idea.

On the one hand, it doesn't actually affect me at all, because I work second shift, and thus rarely watch network TV to start with.
On the other hand, I think McFarlane could probably do with making the three shows he's already got suck less before pinching out a fourth.
On a mysterious glowing third hand, people can always just not watch shows they dislike. Best way I can think of to show cold contempt for something is to refuse to acknowledge its existence.

As a business decision, I don't know whether or not it's a good idea. I'll just ignore it like every show he's had since Family Guy. If I let it upset me that there's a bunch of crap I wouldn't enjoy on TV, I'd be a very unhappy man.

[QUOTE=Wikipedia]MacFarlane's fourth animated show is currently in the works, According to Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly[54]

“He’s stretched thin [MacFarlane] We’ve got one other show we’re contemplating with Seth and looking to broaden our animation brand out too. I love working with the guy, but our plan is not all Seth, all the time. He has something up his sleeve that’s animated, so we’re going to continue to be in business with him for quite a few years and I think you’ll see us to broaden out that brand a little bit.”

Also, it has been revealed that Alex Borstein, who plays Lois among others, is the main character of the show, meaning this will be the first of his shows to be based on a woman. The show will once again be based around a disfunctional family, with talking pets once again. The show will be very similar to Family Guy according to Alex.

Don't need another one. The 3 that are already there are more or less interchangable. I don't see it as a good decision for business either, since I have a feeling that yet another knock off of Family Guy would turn viewers off.

Honestly, as repetitive as it is, it wouldn't be possible if there wasn't an audience for it. Although each show has the same character basis, each one does have it's own feel to it, and while I like FG and am meh on the Cleveland Show, I despise American Dad.

Reminds me of how NBC just put Jay Leno back in the Tonight Show slot. Why? That's the person least likely to break the show immediately. Same reason they "promoted" Conan from Late Night to his brief stint at the Tonight Show; there's a vacancy, and they filled it with the the most proven person they had on their roster. They don't really like to take risks at NBC.

This sort of insular thinking is fine for short term goals, but in the long term your product line is just going to keep breaking itself slowly. If you don't have innovation and new blood, you'll only be able to keep the "hardcore" fans, while casual viewers will just watch something else. There's a risk in bringing in new people, so maybe it's a lose-lose situation if you don't know how to spot talent.

This line of thinking also reminds me of how Nintendo is winning the current generation market; Sony and Microsoft was thinking only of doing their previous console, but bigger (faster, more pixels, etc.). This is great for the people who previously owned an Xbox or PS2, but people who never purchased those didn't bat an eyelash*.

*(except maybe at the blu-ray PS3)
