Superhero Hype!
Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the "Spider-Man" franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three 'Spider-Man' films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.

"We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else's hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable," said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio's chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. "Now everything begins anew, and that's got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can't wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012."

"'Spider-Man' will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

Reboot the series so we can have this? A ****ing teen grappling with blah-blah? Don't we have Twilight to be the Christ of this sort of nonsense, taking upon itself all of the teen angst from movies?

*sighs*

Yeah! I'd rather have the ****pile that was Spider-Man 3! Sooo much better than returning the franchise to what the comics were all about: Peter discovering his powers! What the hell, guys!

Sam Raimi and company never really got it right anyway. I say bring on the reboot, and don't screw it up this time.

It paled in comparison to the previous movies, but it was not a pile of excrement. The fight scenes were epic, music was great and the presentation was perfect.

But yeah, that's what the comics were about right? Peter Parker cutting himself, and Mary Jane getting an abortion behind her parents back?

What part of that sounds good? Did you see Dragon Ball Evolution? DID YOU? They raped Goku with this nonsense and now they're do it to Spidey.

^ Actually Spidey 3 was a pretty big ****pile. When the character you root for the most is the villain (Sandman ftw) and the hero is the character you want to kill the most? Usually not a good sign.

Also "real life problems" doesn't necessarily mean Twilight. And I'm pretty sure we all knew that the DragonBall movie was gonna be awful.

Sandman kicked ass, and Spidey was a douche, so it kind of mixed things up between who was a hero and who was a villain. I liked it and I think it was done on purpose.

But it usually does mean Twilight. And I prayed for the DB movie to be good. =[

That book, video game, or anything adaptations are generally abused. That is what it has taught me. Especially the more difficult ventures such as DB. The creators just took the easy way out because they were faced with a challenge. I want to see this challenge stepped up to.

****ITY **** **** ****!!
WE DON'T NEED ANYMORE OF THAT ****! WE ALL HAVE 2000 SHOWS ON TEEN PREGNANCY, WE HAVE THE TWILIGHT BULL**** AND THEIR MENTALLY RETARDED PROBLEMS, AND EVERY OTHER ****ING "TEEN MOVIE" IN THE WORLD! WE DON'T NEED SPIDERMAN TO BECOME A PART OF ALL THIS BULL****.

oh no not a coming of age story, those never turn out to be good.

Like all of them popular anime. Or E.T. Or the first Spiderman Movie. God knows none of those are any good.

^ I think you know exactly what kind of teen drama I'm talking about. I really don't want to see any more of that.

At best, I can see teen-problems being like the stuff in the first Spider-Man movie. Also, the movie is so early in development that such issues may not even appear. You guys seem to be overreacting. :flying:

Coming of age tales are a great storytelling meathod but given that Spiderman ages in his normal continuty, and that aside from the third movie trying to please too many people at once, a reboot wasn't really needed. While Spiderman was bad it wasn't on the same level of suck as Superman 3&4, or Batman and Robin. So the fanbase got upset upon hearing about the reboot, throw in the blister stupidity that is One more Day(and the story archs that followed) and you're lucky the fans aren't getting the torches and pitchforks out so they can march on Marvle.

Did you not watch the first movie? Peter Parker was in high school...and he grappled with problems.

I'm gonna agree with you on that one. The action was done well and the pacing was good, but Toby for starters wasn't spot-on for Peter Parker. His voice was so weak coming from under the mask, it kind of stole a lot from the charm of Spiderman's other attributes. His scathing wit was one of the appealing attributes to the character, for instance, but they really focused on his emotional struggles and the drama a bit too much.

Then again, I'll side with IRHP as well and say it sounds a lot like they're about to make the same mistakes all over again.

The story shouldn't be about his struggles so much as his amazing triumphs over them. You can smack him in the face as much as you like so long as you give us a sweet victory.

While the action was pretty cool, and I didn't mind Peter being all aggro, the scriptwriters and Topher Grace together managed to ham up one of the coolest characters in the Spiderman arsenal, and my personal favorite: Venom. Having Grace as Brock was totally inappropriate in terms of character, and his performance just didn't carry any emotion for me. It trampled all over the whole cast's acceptable portrayals and distracted the audience from the solid Sandman character portrayal.
