Legendary movies that you hate

Okay, this thread isn't for crapfests like Transformers or The Village. It isn't even for controversial "like it or hate it" flicks like Donnie Darko. This thread is for movies that are beloved by critics and generations of movie fans, but you hate them anyway, no matter how many "Best Of" lists the AFI puts them on.

Here are some of mine:

The Maltese Falcon
All the President's Men
Dr. Strangelove
2001: A Space Odyssey
Anything with the Marx Bros.

First of all, the American Film Institute is a complete joke. The British Film Institute actually knows what they're talking about.

Birth of a Nation. No, this doesn't count as a "controversial love it or hate it" film. It's pretty much universally regarded for its importance, which cannot be denied. But it's a real pain to sit through.

I was never really too big on The Searchers either. It's a fantastically made film, but seriously, someone should have offed John Wayne within the first 20 minutes. Actually, that's how I feel about pretty much every John Wayne movie. I just really can't stand that guy.

As far as more recent universally acclaimed movies go, I really never want to see any of those Toy Story movies again. Ever.

I've also never really been too big on Ingmar Bergman. All respect given, but just never really liked him.

Wow, no wonder we don't get along. I've got a John Wayne throw blanket pinned up on my living room wall. The Duke was the man.

I do agree, however, that The Searchers would have been a better movie if John Wayne's character had ended up dying (at the end, though, not within the first 20 minutes). The happy ending John Ford sticks us with comes off as pretty contrived and a cop-out, especially after the strong feelings expressed by both Duke and Natalie Wood.

Actually, I agree that they should've kept him around until the ending... then offed him. It would've made more sense in the narrative than to simply have him do a complete psychological 180 at the last minute. In hindsight, I'd probably like The Searchers more if I watched it again. I mean, I watched like three movies before it on that day.

I do somewhat exaggerate my disdain for John Wayne. It's mostly his off-screen persona that turns me off as opposed to his acting. I have enjoyed many of his films (Stagecoach and Rio Bravo come to mind). Since my introduction the the western was the more revisionist Spaghetti westerns, I do have a bit of bias toward the Leone aesthetic, though I'm starting to appreciate their American predecessors for what they're worth.

Same thing with me and people like Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, George Clooney, and Jane Fonda. I have nothing against their acting (in fact, they're quite good most of the time), but I hate their politics, and, to a certain extent, that makes me foster a disdain for them on a personal level.

No, it would be pretentious if we were pretending to like films that we didn't like so as to seem more cultured or intelligent or whatever.
