This Japanese film, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film this year, opens in a limited release in the US this week. Ironically for a country whose consistency in filmmaking throughout is matched only by the United States and France, this is the first film from Japan to win the aforementioned award. While I would not consider it to be the finest example of Japanese cinema (I personally slightly preferred Tokyo Sonata as far as Japanese cinema of 2008 goes), I do highly recommend it as an enjoyable and touching film.
