Iron Man

Was a really awesome movie. Great special effects, great humor, great story. Probably one of my favorite comic book movies I've seen in a while.

I don't know, maybe it was the scene after the credits that did it. I'm not going to spoil anything, but stay until the credits are over. It's worth it.

^^That's actually saying a lot with the Spiderman and X-men movies. Now I have to see this one.

So far, with Marvel movies I've seen, it's been...

Iron Man > Spider-Man 2 > X-Men > X2 > Spider-Man >>>>> X-Men: Last Stand > Spider-Man 3 > Rise of the Silver Surfer >>>>>> Daredevil > Fantastic 4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ghost Rider
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

It is my life's mission to see every movie based on a Marvel Comic. So, broken leg or not, I'm seeing this movie.

It was really good.
Spoiler.
Incidentally, does anyone know why the hell Nick Fury is black now? I ask because I respect the source material, and Fury was white for forty-plus years' worth of comics. Like, he was white as recently as 'Punisher MAX--Mother Russia', a series that came out in 2005 or so. And now, as seen in 'Iron Man', the Ultimate Avengers cartoon movies, and 'Marvel Ultimate Alliance', he's turned black. Does anyone know what the deal is there?

Spoiler.
In the Ultimate Universe he was redesigned as a black man - Marvel actually asked Samuel Jackson if they could use his likeness.

Since the movies tend to mix elements of the original and Ultimate continuities, that's pretty much the whole story. Jackson is playing a character whose redesign is based on himself.

Hey I didn't do it.

Besides! You know what this means, right? An Avengers movie! And who's in the Avengers? Captain ****ing America, that's who! And Thor!

And who's their first enemy in every continuity? THE HULK!

This has the potential to be most radical.

I'm hoping Captain America stays dead for a while yet. And I'd rather see a movie about the actual mythological figure Thor, instead of the Marvel superhero. Call me old-fashioned, but I think the 'Thor versus Incredible Hulk' fight would pale into insignificance next to the 'Thor versus Midgard Serpent' battle. That fight would rock. Correction--it would RAGNA-ROCK. (Yeah, I went there. Look on my puns, ye mighty, and despair.)

I should really see it, after suffering through Ghost Rider and because Iron Man and Metal Man aren't too far off.

To add to the metallic content of this post I shall now listen to Iron Man by Black Sabbath. \m/

Weird as it may sound, Captain America has been Marvel's best book for the past five years or so. He'd be hard to pull off on the silver screen but I'd like to see them try.

One of the themes of the Marvel movies is that characters are re-imagined in order to fit in somewhere between the original and Ultimate continuities, and then made into something that would actually be a decent movie. Ultimate Thor is already more like the mythological one - I imagine we'd definitely be seeing some fur-wearing, head-smashing stuff in the Thor movie (which I think has been confirmed).

Yeah, I know about the Thor movie. I've heard they've got Kevin McKidd signed for the lead. Odd choice. Still, I suppose he's got the chops to pull off ridiculously violent drama (he starred in 'Rome', for Cliff's sake).

I'd argue the point of Captain America being Marvel's best book of the past five years (that clearly being 'Punisher MAX') but that's a matter of personal opinion.

Incidentally, I really hate the Avengers, for pretty much the same reason I hate the Justice League--namely, the team is comprised of two or three good characters surrounded by a dozen or so total suckasses who pretty much exist solely as cannon fodder. "Oh, no! I thought my supervillain plot was in trouble back when it was merely Iron Man and Thor trying to kill me, but now Hawkeye is after me, too! Horror of horrors! He might shoot me with that stupid glue arrow! Etc"

Hey now. Hey. Hey. Everyone knows the Wasp sucks, but if you've read the Ultimates (pick it up - even if you don't like the idea of a black Nick Fury, it's a good introduction to the Ultimate universe) you know they've turned Hawkeye into Bulls-eye on steroids.

It's not a matter of everybody fighting the same supervillain - that's ridonculous. Nowadays they will actually go "Gee, dudes, it looks like Ultron here may be a wee bit dangerous for our good friends Captain America and Wasp to try to fight! Let's leave this to THOR, god of thunder and shatterer of worlds!" They actually put members of the teams up against threats that coincide with how capable of dealing with that threat they are - that's why threats in "The Ultimates" are so multi-faceted, like invading armies that need to be hit on multiple front, with the really powerful members actually fighting head-on, serving as a distraction while the likes of Cap go around and kick the asses of whatever asses need kicking behind the scenes.

...Actually, have you read "The Ultimates"? You can pick up the first two volumes, which are a great read, in trade paperback for fairly cheap. I highly recommend it, it's easily the best thing to come out of that continuity.

I'll add to the spoiler text discussion.
Spoiler.
A Captain America movie is currently in the works (IMDb says 2009, but you never know).

The Hulk movie will feature the second "push" toward an eventual Avengers film (someone cameos).

BTW, according to Wikipedia, semi-confirmed heroes for this Avengers film would be Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor. One problem with having many Marvel heroes in one film is that different studios have film rights to different characters (i.e. Kingpin can never be a villain in a Spider-Man film). However, now Marvel has their own studios and they have the film rights to the above characters, so that makes an Avengers movie possible.

Finally, why complain about a black Nick Fury when Kingpin was already redone as a black man (and probably the best thing about the Daredevil film).
Anyhoo, I'll just link to my actual thoughts on the film.

I might look into Ultimates some time. Right now I'm getting into Batman trades, and I prophesy that will keep me busy for a while.

And, while on the one hand it seems like a good idea to match up your heroes against threats they're capable of dealing with, in the end all that's doing is making losers like Quicksilver feel good about themselves. Kind of patronising.

Quicksilver is an unmitigated bad-ass and he scares the **** out of me in Ultimates vol. 2.

It was awesome. I really liked Stan Lee's obligatory cameo.
Spoiler.
I liked the foreshadowing of War Machine when Rhodes considered donning the Mark II suit. I wasn't too thrilled with the public reveal at the end. Iron Man's public identity may have worked out well in the comics when it happened in 2001(?), but I was kinda looking forward to seeing how the bodyguard thing would work out in this day and age.
But that's a small nitpick. It was still awesome.
