The American-born filmmaker George A Romero, who created the genre-defining Living Dead movie franchise, has died at the age of 77, his family have said.

Romero died in his sleep on Sunday after a " brief but aggressive battle" with lung cancer, his manager told Variety.

Romero co-wrote and directed the film that started the zombie series - Night of the Living Dead - in 1968.

It led to a number of sequels - and a slew of imitators.
He was the father of the modern zombie. He started out as a small-time, indie director, and ended up having a massive and lasting impact on horror fiction.

R.I.P. :(

Nobody better make no stupid 'durr hurr hurr he's dead and is thus going to become a zombler' jokes. I have revoked that privilege. George Romero deserves better, damn it.

you'd be hard-pressed to find people many more people who were more influential on horror cinema and indie cinema. RIP

Watching the original Dawn of the Dead in his honor tonight. One of my favorite movies.
