These newbs that just jump in and go "LOL ANIME RULESSS" [strike]kind of[/strike] piss me off. Give a reason or have your little shows be pounded into submission.

Depends on the anime and depends on the American cartoon.

FMA vs. G.I. Joe? Probably FMA.
The Adventures of Shin-chan (I think that's what it's called) vs. Billy and Mandy? Billy and Mandy, hands-down even.

Either way, something being anime doesn't automatically make it cool, nor does it automatically make Japan awesome. :P

^Finally, someone else who see that. There's loads of crap in the U.S, but Japan's got just as many if not more bad cartoons/voice actors than the U.S.

You don't even WANT to see some of the crap that, thank god, hasn't escaped japan. ;p

The big problem here is that not enough countries churn out cartoons.

True, or not enough reach other shores. The only foreign cartoons I recall seeing to date are Tintin and Code Lyoko, both en francais.

You know, this topic was bumped long ago but I feel I need a say in it.

I am so, so tired of otaku screaming that all anime is outstanding. That everything from Japan is quality, and give no reasoning other than "Anime RULEZ!!!1".

Oh yeah? Do you like the tentacle porn, too? That's from Japan. Animation from Japan, and therefore it's anime. And anime = God. Japanimation. That's where the term originated. Japanese animation. There are so many terrible, terrible shows that they have to offer. It's probable that Naruto is the biggest hunk of crap I've ever seen. What is likeable about these characters? They aren't even ninjas. What ninja wears open sandals and bright, eye-searing orange? Disgraceful.

There are quality shows. JBut just because they stick huge eyes and colorful hair on adult-oriented fanservicey girls, does not make these characters any more developed or interesting than in something that comes from America.

I am an artist. I am also an ex-otaku, and because of this damper on my past, I draw the manga tyle. It bothers me just as much when people stick sweatdrops on their characters and draw super "kawaii" chibis as it does when people tell me all manga looks the same. I won't say "Every artist has his or her own style", because unfortunately what we get from liscenced anime pictures online is self-insertion artists tracing CLAMP's artwork with their own vaguely-different characters and expecting asspats for it. And when people lay the truth on them, they fall apart. Just the same as when Japanglish-speaking otaku meet up with someone who knows nothing of the style.

My general point is that there is nothing superior about anime, and there is nothing superior about American cartoons. There are horrible, horrible anime shows, and in my book, saying that anything from Japan "pwnzorz" loses you all credibility. Honestly.

I could get into yaoi fangirls, but I won't. My fingers may fall off.

Asking whether anime or American animation is better is like asking if peas or corn are better. Sometimes, one may fit the meal better, other times it might not have been cooked right, and sometimes, they go great together.

Sorry, that's my hick upbringing, g'hyuck!

This is an old thread. Why the BUMP?

My current opinion is that it doesn't matter between simple concept of "This is Anime. ANIME. LOVE IT OR DIE."/"Nickelodean! It has stuffs! WATCH IT!" But the fact of the following:

1. Good story-line.

2. A fitting hero and co.

3. Misc. stuff to add. (Left over ideas that are actually made into something, etc.)

[strike]--4. ?????--

--5. PROFIT!--[/strike]

I dunno, it depends. I like both. Verily.

Val only had one post in this topic about how he stopped watching Family Guy because he realized it was horrible.

Edit: Also, on the large lists of awesome American cartoons, why was Histeria not mentioned?
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

Image Possibly by chance no one's heard of Histeria, or just didn't think of it at the time.

Image Me, I've never heard of it.

There are LOTS of them. I've had personal experience with one in particular, though I don't share the interest. That's basically why I respectfully request that Prince Phaeral goes into it. And whatever you do, DO NOT get two or more of them together, especially in a bookstore.

As for the topic, I like a bit of both, and both have (though Japan moreso) have cartoons that elicit my WTF response.

I voted anime because I've been watching too much of the crap American cartoons (ex. Camp Lazlo), and I've been watching too much of the kickass anime (ex. FMA). Therefore, as of right now, my view of anime is a lot higher than my view of cartoons. Of course, there ARE the good, bad, and the ugly of both. I'm just in an 'Anime-phase' right at the moment. And overall, I DO like anime more than american cartoons. Just not by too long a shot.

Do you truly insist so? Because I could go on for a while.
