I thought Shawshank was pretty good. Not sure if I'd call it a favorite of mine. My mom says it's her favorite movie of all time, though.

...as for legendary movies I hated, I can't think of any off the top of my head. Maybe someone will list one that jogs my memory.

Most people thought Armageddon sucked. I actually thought it was okay. And I've never seen Shawshank Redemption.

Hmm... I don't know if this counts, but I saw the original Halloween about a year ago and thought it was the most boring thing ever. Though maybe, it's just because the movie hasn't aged that well.

Yeah, I didn't care for that flick either.

Both John Carpenter and Wes Craven are highly overrated, at least in my opinion. Carpenter made just a few good movies (most prominently Escape From New York and The Thing), and I don't think Craven has ever given us anything that wasn't a total piece of crap.

Starship Troopers.

Yeah, the bugs were cool. Everything else about the movie was unremarkable.

I really disliked watching 2001: A Space Odyssey. Extremely boring, but maybe that's just me.

Personally I find 2001 to be extremely fascinating, but I can see how someone less accustomed to unconventional cinema would find it boring. Or someone more accustomed to it, for that matter.

Everything just gets dragged out for far too long, especially the 20-minute acid trip near the end. Never mind that the dude turns into a fetus.

The thing is, I really like a lot of Kubrick's other stuff, especially A Clockwork Orange, Spartacus, Barry Lyndon, and Paths of Glory. But Dr. Strangelove and 2001 just aren't enjoyable to me at all.

You know, I know my taste in movies well enough that I usually outright avoid films that I would know I would hate. If I have to mention a classic film, I would probably have to say most of Jean Luc Goddard's films (namely Two or Three Things I Know About Her) rub me the wrong way.

BTW, I should make a note that you all should be careful that you don't turn this thread into a flame war. In my opinion, for any film there will AWAYS be people who like it and people who don't. So, please be careful about saying that a certain film is "the worst film ever" or something like that.

2001 is most interesting to me for its striking photography. Other than that, I can't say much except that Hal9000 is an inspiration to homicidal computers everywhere. Full Metal Jacket is Kubrick's outright best, though, IMO.

I've heard the name Shawshank Redemption come up a lot, post release, but I've never gotten interested enough to check it out. What's the backstory to that? What makes it good to so many people?

ai, shawshank is one of those movies thats actually better then the book (short story), which only happens with the best movies (the godfather for instance).

also the main antagonist dude gets so ****ing totally owned. if you punched your boss in the face and got away with it you still would not have owned him as much as this dude got owned.

i hope this has been a informative poast

Would you mind explaining your reasoning behind these?

Some no doubt feel this way about the entire series, but I didn't care much for Rocky IV.
The Robot ruined the movie for me. Even without it, it's still kinda cheesy and comes off as a Cold War propaganda flick disguised as a boxing movie...which lacks the characterization and drama of the first three films.

^ Rocky IV isn't really "Legendary".

Rocky is, but none of the sequels (except maybe II) are really considered classics

I've tried watching The Maltese Falcon twice, and both times it simply bored me stiff. I don't know why, but I just couldn't get into it. And before you say anything, no, I'm not the kind of guy who has to be watching constant explosions in order to be entertained. I love movies of every shape and description; old and new, subdued and exciting, foreign and domestic. I watch pretty much anything I can get my hands on. But The Maltese Falcon just didn't do a thing for me.

As for the Marx Brothers, I don't see what's so awesome about them. Groucho just bounces around insulting everybody for no reason (and his puns are painful), and Harpo breaks it up by acting like a retard every once in a while. I sat through all of Duck Soup and didn't giggle once.
