Up to 18/30:

Wordplay (Creadon, 2006), 1-2-14 – 10/10
Annie Hall (Allen, 1977), 1-13-14 – 586/10
Runaway Train (Konchalovsky, 1985), 1-23-14 – 6/10
Paul (Mottola, 2011), 1-24-14 – 6.5/10
Risky Business (Brickman, 1983), 2-15-14 – 8.5/10
The Bridge on the River Kwai (Lean, 1957), 2-22-14 – 10/10
Admission (Weitz, 2013), 2-24-14 – 5/10
The LEGO Movie (Lord and Miller, 2014), 3-2-14 – 11.5/10
Hitchcock (Gervaski, 2012), 3-4-14 – 7.5/10
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (Reiner, 1982), 3-16-14 – 8.5/10
Moonrise Kingdom (Anderson, 2012), 3-26-14 – 9.5/10
Revenge of the Nerds (Kanew, 1984), 3-29-14 – ?/10
To Rome with Love (Allen, 2012), 4-2-14 – 7.5/10
LA Story (Jackson, 1991), 4-16-14 – 9.5/10
Hyde Park on Hudson (Michell, 2012), 5-5-14 – 7/10
The Way, Way Back (Faxon and Rash, 2012), 5-10-14 – 9/10
The Internship (Levy and Vaughn, 2013), 5-12-14 – 5/10
The Rock (Bay, 1996), 5-18-14 – 6/10

This is widely considered to be Michael Bay's...uh..."best" film. I can see why, though: he doesn't use CGI as a crutch, he actually does have a couple of establishing shots, and at least including Sean Connery makes Nicolas Cage's dumbest performances palatable.

If you want my full opinion on Mr. Cage, I will say that most of his recent movies after Adaptation (perhaps the last good movie he made) feature totally phoned-in performances on his part (he's been nominated four times at the Razzies for Worst Actor), but I guess speaking at random volumes in 70 movies over 30 years might get you an Oscar at some point during your career.

you can say a lot of things about nicolas cage's acting, particularly that it has been VERY BAD recently (though apparently he's phenomenal in the recently released Joe), but I really can't describe anything he's ever done as "phoned in."

It might be too late to get in on this. I will try to remember what movies I had not seen before I have seen this year. I can't say I watch too many movies, and most of the ones recently I just ignore.

5/30
Frozen (Apr 4) - 4/10
Muppets Most Wanted (Apr 11) - 4/10
Godzilla '54 (May 9) - 6/10 (600/10 with UN's snark)
Pan's Labyrinth (May 10) - 10/10
DBZ: Cooler's Revenge (May 25) - 6/10

It's been a while since Val has watched any Dragon Ball. Also, for some reason Toonami's airing of the movie used the original Japanese music instead of Bruce Falconer's dubbed soundtrack. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just... different.

The Rock (Bay, 1996), 5-18-14 – 6/10
Quartet (Hoffman, 201?), 5-25-14 – 8/10

Thoughtful, beautifully photographed, marvelously scored, and made extra-fun with Billy Connolly's comic quips as well as an interesting comparison of opera and rap, this is a movie I'd see twice.
