trust me, it is almost just as easy to find scanlated manga as it is subbed anime. And, like with anime, the quality of translations has gotten immensely better since like 2000 due to the fact that all of the weeaboos have grown up, gone to college, and learned Japanese :{P

The idea that all manga translations are crappy is just as outdated as the idea that anime subs are. There are a lot more people fluent in Japanese and English now to translate them, not to mention that if they ARE officially translated, you can usually find the official English version scans online.

unless youre going really obscure then youll probably have to settle for broken engrish haha

One Piece is a league of silly superheroes pretending to be pirates, wehreas Naruto is a bunch of Magicians pretending to be ninjas.

Kil'jaeden wrote:99% of all manga is not and will not be available in English. Most of them are better than what we get. And the ones we do get got their exposure from amateur translators well before they became mainstream. I am not sure what you mean by manga services on the web or pirating.
Indeed this is true.

However with regards to "piracy"... A good number of manga sites actually only carry something that isn't licensed, with a few exceptions like the Shonen Trinity (Bleach, One Piece, Naruto) or those mangas like Nausicaä, Barefoot Gen, and Akira that might as well be printed on paper made from the bark of Albino Redwood trees given how bloody RARE they are.

Seriously, if you ever are in a bookstore and find a copy of Akira, buy that damn thing immediately - if you don't then it's going to appear on eBay or Amazon at an inflated price. And if you see Nausicaä, first make sure that you are not dreaming - especially if it's one of the later volumes. And if it's Barefoot Gen, then you have clearly somehow been transported into an alternate dimension where more than 5 copies were even PRODUCED.

Seriously, that's thirty-two thousand English manga books available there. Nausicaa is right on the front page. You've got no excuse.

If you do want to know, I always found the Naruto manga as being a lot more... what's the word? Artsy? than the anime is?

Also, less stupid filler. :I
IMO, the manga's combat is poorly detailed, much like Card Captors, but the anime has fantastic fights. Although, you bring up a fantastic point regarding all that damn filler...

I prefer the manga sometimes, but usually not. Death Note, for example, really shines when animated, Madhouse just pumped detail into every scene, plus the music and acting is top notch. On the other hand, Dragon Ball's manga pacing is way better than the anime. It comes down to how a series is handled, I think.

yeah I prefer the manga for almost everything CLAMP but in the case of CCS, the anime is definitely the way to go

A Nausicaä manga collection?

For under $80?

About **** time. (Also, I like how the used is more expensive than the "new" - which, given Amazon's track record, is probably not even "new" in the first place and is in good enough condition teh seller thinks "Hey I can mark this up." :p Last time I purchased something new off of Amazon it had obviously been used - unless all copies of Radiant Historia ship with a save file on the cart and with no shrink wrap. All from a five-star seller, too.)
CuccoLady wrote:yeah thats true licensed manga is really hard to find, unfortunately
Actually that depends on the series. Want to read One Piece? Head to the local bookstore - they have like volumes 1-60 as well as some collections of three volumes. Same for stuff like Dragon Ball, Bleach, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Shaman King, Yu-Gi-Oh, Sgt. Frog, xxxHOLIC.

Junji Ito? Unless you go online, you'll probably never find anything except Uzumaki and maybe Gyo. (Certainly not his Frankenstein collection.)

Tales of Innocence or BioMeat Nectar? Forget it.

I could not find either of those on Amazon. But you could fly to Japan and buy it. Or import it. Or buy a copy from a shady guy that runs a shop out of his basement. Or wait for it to be translated so you can buy it. Because everyone that reads manga only knows about a given manga after it is licensed and released in their language.

i literally just googled "read nausicaa online" and the first hit had the entire thing fully translated.... like... im not seeing the issue

[[i mean, *ahem*, wow i just bought it totally legally online wow]]

it's the exact same approach as finding subbed anime you just google it and it is served to you on a silver platter, UNLESS it's obscure and licensed. But there's so much that isn't

as far as anime and manga go, i agree

games, now, though...i haven't played many one piece games, but such naruto games as ive played have been way betterer (man, 'rise of a ninja' was so hype, guy)

man, if they made an actual adventure game out of one piece stead of these lame listless fighters and incomprehensible wonderswan rpgs----something like ww, maybe, with an exploration aspect with some dang-ass freedom to it

pirating around is so rad

The only anime video game I have ever played is this dumb Inuyasha fighting game for the Dreamcast.

Good times, man.

[I've never played a One Piece game but I'm pretty sure they are probably terrible, I would not be surprised if they are]

[[pirate adventures One Piece Wind Waker sounds rad as hell tho]]

The "Gekitou Ninja Taisen" games for Naruto were pretty great.
The Ninja Revolution games look amazing too:

(manga spoilers probably, that is full of special attacks and all the characters ever)

they sail around on the ocean, they fight and tear sh*t up, and they have the stated goal of tracking down the greatest treasure that has ever been---they may be superhero-y guys, but they're clearly piratey guys as well (they rise to the lazytown definition of pirating, at the very least)
