The Transformers.
Samurai Jack.
The Simpsons.
Futurama.
South Park.
Megas XLR.
The Tick.
Batman the Animated Series.
Justice League Unlimited.
The old Dexter's Laboratory episodes.
Clone Wars.
Pretty much anything by Tartakovsky.
Disney circa Tarzan on back.
Anything by Pixar.
The Centurions.
Batman Beyond.
The Popeye cartoon.
Merry Melodies.
Looney Tunes.
Tom and Jerry.
The old Mickey Mouse shorts.
Winnie the Pooh (there was never a finer kids' show).
The Flintstones.
Johnny Quest.
The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest.
Space Ghost.
Bird Man.
Korgoth of Barbaria.
The Venture Bros.
Mission Hill.
The Oblongs.
The Angry Beavers.
X-Men.
X-Men: Evolution.
SpongeBob Squarepants.
The Rugrats (first five years or so were freaking hilarious).
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Ren and Stimpy.
The Powerpuff Girls.
Johnny Bravo.
Duck Dodgers.
The Boondocks.
Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron.
Rocko's Modern Life.
The Pirates of Dark Water.
Pinky and the Brain.
Gargoyles.
Hey Arnold!
Home Movies.
King of the Hill.
Invader Zim.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
Superman The Animated Series.
Freakazoid.
Dave the Barbarian.
The Iron Giant. (I should shoot myself for forgetting this)
See that right there? Notice anything about that list? Each of thos cartoons, even if they're meant to fill a specific niche (like Home Movies or Winnie the Pooh), kicks ass. American animation has the richest history in the world, and has more heavy-hitting series and movies this very second than Japan will have twenty years from now.
No. Not all of those kick ass. Duck Dodgers DEFINATELY kicks ass, and so does Invader Zim, and there are quite a few on that lists that are "good", but in most cases, the ones you listed simply look for a quick laugh by using stupidity. I may not be a comedy person, and Yes, I DO enjoy me some Family Guy, but twenty years from now american cartoons will be as degenerate as a troglodyte. I don't mean to offend you, Wy, but I will always stand on Anime's side. I still LIKE american cartoons, but it isn't a love affair. And for those of you who won't give anime a chance and don't know that censoring a four letter word isn't supposed to look like this: ...., but it should look like this: ****, well, you really should reconsider your standpoint.
For those who have compelling arguments against my post: Save them. This isn't a debate. This is a pole. My counterpoints against Wy were meant as a simple comment stating my opinion. Meh.

I don't really watch too many cartoons, but here's what I think about it: I find the wester style cartoon to be more enjoyable to watch (funnier, more fun in general) but I enjoy the way anime looks better.
Really, the only cartoons I watch on a somewhat regular basis nowadays are South Park and Family Guy. Here's a list of what the cartoons I've watched throughout the duration of my life (not including movies):
Mario Bros.
Sonic
Beastwars
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Justice League
Doug
Rugrats
Tom and Jerry
Loony Tunes
Rocko's Modern Life
Pokemon
Batman Beyond
Scooby-Doo
Johnny Bravo
SWAT Cats
Thunder Cats
Etcetera
I've watched more western cartoons than anything (only Pokemon was anime, I think).
But in terms of my video games, I prefer an anime look. I shall remain neutral on this poll.

No - each of those legitimately kicks ass. One of the only ones you could make an argument against is Angry Beavers.
Liking Family Guy is not a point in your favor.

Well, questions like these are stupid, because the answer is, it depends.
For every good American cartoon (The Venture Bros, early Simpsons, ect) there are crappy cartoons (Most new cartoons I'm too embarassed to even say I've watched).
For every good Japanese cartoon (Escaflowne, Trigun, ect) there are crappy cartoons (DBZ, Inuyasha).
And there are many cartoons from both that people seem to love that I've just completely hated (Family Guy, Naruto, Princess Mononoke).
So a lot of it is about everyone's personal tastes.
Each cartoon has their strengths, and it's impossible to judge one genre against the other.
But, it's a fact that the Venture Bros. currently owns anything ever made in Japan. The Venture Bros. is my new god of comedy. It's simply the best written and funniest thing ever.
So, to answer the stupid question, based on the Venture Bros. alone, American cartoons >>>>>>>> Japanese cartoons.
-jay
Oh, and Wy, that truely was a great, ass-kicking list. A lot of those are cartoon classics that I simply love (The Tick and Gargoyles in particular) and each of those could stand up against anything Japanese animation could put out any day.
I think part of the problem is that American cartoons seem to be diluted with so much crap these days.
Also, anime is one of those fad things that many people just jump on and say it's cool simply because it's a fad.

I agree with (the beginning of) Jay's post; there's good and bad in each.
I also think there's a different perception about the average quality of anime, because mostly the good anime is brought over or fan-translated for our pleasure; a lot of the crap is left behind. Friends and forum-goers recommend the good ones (who recommends crap?). As a result, people are going "Heya, this is pretty nifty!" There's some American animated gems that we recognize (maybe not all the same ones together), but we also remember the crap Americans produce as well.
The Transformers.
Samurai Jack.
The Simpsons.
Futurama.
South Park.
Megas XLR.
The Tick.
Batman the Animated Series.
Justice League Unlimited.
The old Dexter's Laboratory episodes.
Clone Wars.
Pretty much anything by Tartakovsky.
Disney circa Tarzan on back.
Anything by Pixar.
The Centurions. (shut up. The Centurions kicked ass)
Too much anime is mass-produced shlock. When it's great it's mind-blowing, like with Fooly Cooly or the original Ghost in the Shell movie or Cowboy Bebop, but in general the better half of American cartoons trumps the better half of anime.

I'd have to say Anime, but I certainly like American cartoons. It's a hard question...I prefer Comedy from American (Family Guy, Simpsons, Futurama), and action/drama from Anime (Fullmetal Alchemist, Trigun)
But all and all, Anime.
And yes, Chuckle, there should be a LoZ anime.

Manga was better. In both cases.
I listed Fooly Cooly as exemplary awesome anime, so of course I conede.
No. Gundam 0083, Gundam 0080, and 08th MS Team were fantastic, top of the line mecha anime. Pretty much any other series - the original, Gundam Wing, G Gundam - are either stale or utter trash.
I hated Princess Mononoke.
Granted.
Not a bad list...
No.
Yes to NGE, no to InuYasha. InuYasha is DBZ for girls, only without the guilty pleasure factor of main characters being violently murdered all the time.
No comment, never seen.
So be it, I'll pull out a more complete list of bad-ass American cartoons, my previous list being at the top.

I like both, but prefer Anime. Especially since American Cartoons these days consist of things like Family Guy, My Gym Partner's a Monkey and Ying Yang Yo. I like humor that doesn't consist of completer and utter stupidity. Partial stupidity maybe, but not total stupidity. they're are a lot of good American Cartoons these days like Justice League, Clone Wars, ect. though.
