For The Simpsons, the 21st century began with the death of Maud Flanders. Now after 14 years, the producers intend to kill off another regular character.
Executive producer Al Jean admitted as much in a recent phone conference with the press, promoting Sunday's 25th season debut of The Simpsons.
"I'll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won't say who it is," Jean said cagily.
In fact, virtually all the major characters have been rewarded with an Emmy over the years.
He was much more forthcoming about the season premiere, Homerland, a spoof of, yes, Homeland. In it, Lisa believes that Homer has been "turned" by terrorists for his access to nuclear secrets at the Springfield plant.
Fittingly enough, Homeland's third season premiere and the Simpsons spoof air on the same Sunday night.
I don't watch The Simpsons (or television, period) much anymore, but I figured this was worth posting here. Based on Jean's hint, the characters who could possibly be offed are:
Bart Simpson
Homer Simpson
Marge Simpson
Lisa Simpson
Abraham Simpson
Edna Krabappel
Rabbi Hyman Krustofski
Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Sideshow Bob
Moe Szyslak
Barney Gumble
Krusty the Clown
Carl Carlson
Chief Wiggum
Comic Book Guy
Duffman
Anyone want to place bets?

I bet Apu, Moe, or Chief Wiggum. I haven't followed for a zillion seasons, but I'm super curious now.

Rabbi Hyman Krustofski. I never realized how gross that name sounds when you dissect it. But I think it's gonna be Grandpa as well. It'd cause too much anger to kill anyone in the Simpson immediate family and Duffman would just be stupid to be killed.
I haven't watched this show in eleven years, however. So I can't say I care too much....

Well, the plot sounds like something Sideshow Bob or Wiggum would be involved in...

One of the less "important" characters. I'm guaranteeing you now that they won't kill off anyone in/close to the main family.
So, they're probably pull a Dr. Nick and kill off, let's say, Duffman.

DuffMan I think tried to commit suicide but changed his mind once he got back together with his boyfriend. This'll be a regular character they said. So I can't see it being Duffman.

You can't kill Duffman, only his actor. There must always be...a Duffman.

It seems so, judging by how I can't find anything.

I think the death is supposed to happen sometime this season, not necessarily in the premiere.

Wow this is sad.
Statement from executive producer Al Jean, on behalf of The Simpsons:
I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace. She was beloved by all at "The Simpsons" and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.
Earlier we had discussed a potential storyline in which a character passed away. This was not Marcia's Edna Krabappel. Marcia's passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Just before that other character dies...

^ I'm pretty sure humanity will go extinct before The Simpsons is allowed to end.
Someone will invent a supercomputer that will churn out new episodes long after Earth has become a lifeless rock.
