Things that should've happened by now:
  • World War III (Akira, Escape from New York, The Time Machine)
  • The world being taken over by an evil scientist (Mega Man, Spiral Zone)
  • An alien invasion (Duke Nukem 3D, Macross, The Transformers)
  • A sentient dinosaur invasion (Attack of the Super-Monsters)
  • Flying cars (Astro Boy)
  • Colonization of space (2001: A Space Odyssey, Destroy All Monsters, Lost in Space)
  • Advanced cryogenics (2001: A Space Odyssey, Demolition Man)
  • Time travel (Deathlok, Freejack, Quantum Leap)
  • Robots (Astro Boy, I, Robot, Lost in Space, Mega Man)
  • Darling robot children (Astro Boy, Mega Man)
  • The world being obliterated by nuclear war (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Crystalis, Deathlok, Fist of the North Star, V for Vendetta)
  • The world being obliterated by meteorites (Flash Gordon)
  • Manhattan being converted to a maximum-security prison (Escape from New York)
  • Weird voodoo gangs in L.A. (Predator 2)

Thank goodness none of those happened, or else the world would be a real mess right now.

Quantum Leap doesn't count; it was set only a decade into the future, & the time-travel project was (A) a classified government secret, & (B) nigh-uncontrollable once activated.

And remember, "I'm-a Calavicci, number one!"
