You can bet on fights (your own or others') in the Magic Field, or enter a Tournament. Tournaments cost money, but if you get a good place you can make that back and more, as well as some items. You'd also probably make money in Story Mode or by doing an Arcane Quest. The other stuff all costs money (including the Ambush Instructor, who does require tuition. The tuition depends on the course level you're taking, with some extra for your first lesson; however, it's fairly cheap.)
Or of course you could try your luck at the casino.

Alright.
Chapter 1: Invasion
Sebille flitted about her personal grove, tending to the flora which had been planted for her to keep at her birth, as was customary among the fey. She hummed lightly to herself, an old song that every fairy knew. She was, at the moment, content to be in her sylvan setting.
The fairy glanced up at the sound of a horn. That particular horn made a unique sound, and was rarely blown; this meant something interesting was about to occur, and she was to listen for further instructions which were broadcast throughout the country by means of a spell from a powerful Charmer. She set down her tools and floated over to a tree, where she alighted and reclined, waiting for what would come next.
It blew a second time. Strange... she had only heard this once before, this horn blowing twice. That represented an immediate danger, and the capable mages of Quiensol were to report to their stations at various points throughout the woodland. Sebille had been recently promoted, and so apprehensively took wing and began flapping to her sentry point, a few minutes' flight from her grove.
A third. The horn blew a third time. Sebille stopped, shocked. The third horn... what did that mean? Two meant immediate danger, one meant listen for instructions... three... three...
Quiensol was under attack.
Yes, invasion. That was what it meant. Terrified, Sebille shakily winged her way over to her lookout post. It was towards the forested coastline-- it granted her a lovely view, in fact, of the ocean, if she flew high enough. She had always loved the sight of the ocean, and even in this time of danger, she wanted a glimpse of the serene waters outside her sylvan home. She floated higher, higher... then, once more, she gasped in shock.
The sea was crawling with ships. A fierce battle was raging there, with arrows flying from all sides. The fleets-- the magnitude of which could only be attained by Beintoa's royalty, Sebille was sure-- were struggling to find mooring points, and so no one had landed yet. However, the rain of deadly projectiles had to be thinning out her homeland's defense forces, even in spite of their excellent natural cover.
To shield herself from this terrible spectacle, the fairy crashed down into the foliage, heedlessly plummeting through the canopy to the thick brush below. Upon reaching the forest floor, an unwelcome sight greeted her: a pair of Beintoan corsairs, cutlasses drawn at the sound of her brash action. The men, unwashed bilge rats by the looks of them, glanced at each other before giving their target a gaptoothed grin as they moved in for the kill.

No. I can't keep it up. because I can't kill one of them in a single hit with any of my spells I bet. and by the time they run out of NP to use stab I'll only have 10MP left, which either means a heal so I die slower or a minor spell which will barely hurt them. -_-
Meh. I'll just continue healing till I die. -_-

Sebille: Thanks, I guess we can safely go now. I'm Sebille, by the way.
Culeios: Aw, I wanted to see what would happen, but... alright. Wanna go to the city or the coastline?
(The city is your hometown of Avelionnes, one of the larger treetop settlements in Quiensol. Alternatively you can go to the coastline and see what's going on.)

city.

Sebille: Let's go back to the city and find out what to do.
Culeios: Yeah, alright.
The pair headed back to Avelionnes from the fairy's sentry point, believing that more good would be done with some orders from the local duke than by waiting around at Sebille's post.
Upon reaching the raised city, the two noticed an odd quiet. Their sylvan homeland had never seen an urban area of the forest look so abandoned. Even the normally chattery birds of the area seemed to hush in the somber mood.
Culeios took a local ladder to a treetop, confidently and swiftly climbing, while the summoner flew ahead. One of the few places with any commotion around it, as they saw, was the duke's house, a modest but beautiful abode, with extra rooms for governmental and military documents and letters. They went over and greeted the guards, who recognized Sebille on sight and waved her and her companion through.
The fairy had seen the inside of this structure before, having previously run errands as a young messenger. Some floral and painted decorations graced the walls and corners, but it was little different from the house of any normal citizen. The down-to-earth bureaucracy of the nation was generally supported and liked for their lack of needless decorum and luxury; the house was a prime example.
At the moment, it was populated by several scurrying Quiensoli. They flitted and dashed madly into and out of the foyer, some carrying scrolls or occasionally supplies and items. Seeing nothing to bar their way, the mages went through to the next hall, then took the door Sebille knew to lead to the duke's study.
The duke, Laefelir, was in there, a somewhat short, middle-aged elf with quick, intelligent eyes. Currently he was poring over detailed maps of the forest coast, sometimes circling or dotting points on the scroll with his quill pen. After a brief period of time, he looked up.
Duke Laefelir: Yes?
Culeios: Do you have any special orders that need to be carried out? We dealt with some stuff at her sentry post, and we weren't sure...
Laefelir: What did you see?
Culeios: Some Beintoan pirates, I guess. We took care of 'em.
Sebille: Actually, I went above the treeline and looked out. There was a huge fleet of Beintoan ships, and they were clearly trying to land troops. There was a battle going on, but I don't think we were doing too well.
Laefelir: That's... distressing.
The duke glanced down and made some more marks on the scroll.
Laefelir: Hm... ugh. My elite forces have been dispatched already. I don't know whether I can trust you with this... but... do you think you could try to steal their plans?
Culeios: Huh?
Laefelir: I doubt you'll get a hold of their full invasion plan, but they must have something detailing their orders for this battle in writing on the flagship. Well... what are your specialties?
Culeios: I'm a charmer, sir.
Sebille: I just started as a summoner.
Laefelir: Ah, good enough. If you two can try to sneak aboard their flagship and steal their plans for this battle, it would be an immense help. Alternatively I could hunt down someone else to do it, or give it a shot myself, and you can go and fight on the coast or retake your sentry position.
Culeios: Uh... it's all the same to me, what do you think?
Laefelir: Ah yes, I almost forgot... I'll pay you each rather well for the plans, if you think you are up to the task. If not, that's fine.
Culeios: Got it. Well, Sebille?
a) Steal plans
b) Fight on the coast
c) Return to sentry position
d) Something else
You can leave Story Mode whenever you want, just like WE. Also like WE, it doesn't really matter what's happening in the story-- all options are always available, unless I specifically say otherwise.
