Edge Hogging

Not long ago, this forum had a topic talking about video clips of acclaimed players going at it in SSBM. I watched a few of the movies and noticed that in them, there was a noticeable amount of edge guarding. Initially, I was really put off by this and concluded that these guys were just being cheap and shouldn‘t be revered as such great players. Of course, I later realized that this was stemming from the fact that I personally look down upon that tactic. Whenever playing against anyone, I always back off and allow them to recover after being knocked off. Heck, I even do it with the CPU’s… sometimes… rarely… okay, they don’t count. ^_^;;
Anyway, what do you guys think? Is edge hogging acceptable or a cheap move? And do you do it?

Completely acceptable. I do it all the time. It's part of the game....

Seems acceptable to me. Besides chances are you blew them when you were far from the edge.
I find it a little uncommon when a fighter is coming back and the other one is close to the edge(In 1 Vs. 1 of course. More players incresase those odds)

There are no cheapness rules in a tournament. Play to win...
Plus there are ways to get back even if someone is edge guarding or edge hogging.

Hey, it's not like you've got anything else to do while the guy's out there.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

No such thing is cheap gaming in SSBM. It just means that you need better skills to get through the edge-guarding. It may suck, but it's life. I expect people to play seriously, not nicely. Serious play is the best, regardless of who wins or loses.

I use that tactic, especially if someone starts to bug me. I hate trying to get around it when someone uses it on me though.

I'm lucky: I only get Green Misfire when it would help me, such as when someone is edge-guarding. I don't get it every time I need it, but I never get it when it would hurt me.

1/8. That's why it's lucky that I never get it when it would hurt me.

I think that was taken into account when the designers made the game because most of the characters up+b move deals damage AND acts as a means of recovery. So really there is no foul play involved, it just all relies on the timing of both players.

I edge guard often, though I really only get the chance to when we were close to the edge in the first place. If they survive a hard blow far from the edge and catch it, by the time I run over to them, they've grabbed hold.

Edge guarding is the WAY YOU BEAT PEOPLE. The point is to KNOCK THEM OFF THE EDGE. I don't think it's cheating, but I could be crazy.

It's annoying, but not necessarily cheap. There are no rules in SSBM tournaments, and the only things that qualify as being cheap is pausing and unpausing without telling your opponent, blocking your opponent's vision, and reaching over and messing with your opponent's controller. Other than that, it's fair game.

Exactly, heck, even items aren't really cheap.(not always the smartest move, because too many explode) Frankly, if we could take off explosions, it wouldn't be a problem.
